*Story Time*
According to ancient Greek mythology Persephone, daughter of Zeus and Demeter, had many suitors but was highly coveted by her mother who kept them away. Among these suitors was Hades who fell madly in love with her. He was so determined to have her, that he abducted her from her garden and carried her off to the underworld. There she was tricked to eat pomegranate seeds which bound her to the Underworld and there she would remain, against her will and become and Queen of the Underworld. Persephone was so miserable that a deal was struck between the gods, Zeus, Demeter and Hades that Persephone was to return to Earth for half of the year and remain in the Underworld for the other half. Demeter is the goddess of nature and it is said when autumn and winter come, and the crops freeze over, it is Demeter mourning the loss of her daughter. When spring and summer come, Persephone is back on Earth.
The name Persephone means to prosper or to shoot forth. I am often drawn to the dichotomy of simultaneous growth and decay.
Persephone is associated with harvest, fertility, growth, vegetation and all things blooming.
